The unprecedented recent world economic crisis has prompted many
questions :-
- How did it happen so quickly?
- Why was it a total surprise to
many people?
- Why was no action taken to avert it?
- Could we not have prevented
it?
- How do we make sure it does not happen again?
- Where were our
independent assurance providers during this time?
- Were they
unaware of the issues or did they highlight the dangers and
were ignored?
Whilst the answers are many and can be (and are being) debated
a significant challenge has resulted for the assurance providers
in many organisations.
This challenge is to provide a much more comprehensive and
wide ranging level of independent assurance to senior management.
This has led to a fundamental rethink of the assurance activities
and their roles. As most of these functions are independent
of each other, traditionally little coordination of these
activities took
place (or was even deemed necessary)
